Usain Bolt Should Be More Humble? I DON'T THINK SO

The Olympics isn't exactly a beacon of cultural relativity and understanding, nor are they all that ethical behind the scenes despite what the "we are the world" outward appearance might be. I am married to a Jamaican, who is actually a childhood friend of Usain Bolts, the grew up together in the same little neighborhood in St. Ann. I also had a summer internship with a good number of other Jamaicans and one of the most significant things I can tell you about them as a people is that they are very very proud--And I find it nothing short of inspiring.

When I see them with their flags raised high, I feel proud with them. They have come from great adversity yet still love their home, their identity, culture, etc. Even more so, when you come from adversity and perform the way the Jamaicans did this year at the Olympics you have every reason the be extremely proud and show it! That type of pride and patriotism should be admired, because it can be shared and it harms no one.

I think that the people who complained about Usain's behavior are the ones that are showing character weakness because they have an inability to share in his joy, simply because it was not them winning/or a country they like winning. When I see people win a race like Usain did, no matter where they are from I feel an extreme pride, and joy that transfers over from the winner to me. When Usain continued across the finish line long after he has passed it with his arms raised, when he held up his #1 guesture, when he beat his chest like a champion, when he broke it down with a Jamaican victory dance, I was smiling and laughing ear to ear. Maybe the committee can stop being so up tight and share in that excitement for once.

As far as cultural relativism goes, their complain was culturally insensitive. Being humble, down played and subdued, may be a fine and dandy reaction in your culture, or the culture of the people complaining on the committee but its unJamaican, and frankly its unnatural for anyone to be humble at a time like that. If they so choose to do so thats ok but if not don't try to beat them up about it either.

I could say more, about why I suspect they reacted that way etc or point out instances when people like the complainers and/or the Olympics themselves were not humble but I don't want to over shadow the happiness of recalling the victory by focusing on negativity, maybe I will call them out a little later on their own unexposed BULL, cause thats what I love to do.
