Life

I enjoy people watching and I think there is something very deep and profound to be learned about ones self by watching others. Some would say that the world around us is nothing more than a mirror image of the people who influenced it or manifested it.  On an activism or humanitarian note much of my effort goes into pointing out social problems and trying to come up with feasible, efficient solutions that benefit everyone. Some of it is about the mundane aspects of life like finances that we all get wrapped up in. We can all live without money, but most of us have no idea how. We instead live in a society that is based on those numbers, figures and slips of green paper. But $ certainly isn't everything. It's really nothing at all...

In this collection you will see entries about everyday life, many of which are only specific to people who share any similarities with me (i.e. being a black american, being an "ebayer", etc) But there are beneficial messages, in this collection for people of all walks of life.

I Don't Understand the Prevalence of Racism

In the wake of the up and coming 2008 Presidential elections along with some things I and my family are experiencing in our everyday lives I am simply perplexed by the prevalence of racism.

I have written about racism in the work place before, in cases where there is an over qualified individual of a minority "racial" group and a less or completely unqualified individual who is white getting a job or position over the minority. Or cases in which black employees are reprimanded or even fired for mistakes or offenses that are hardly noticed when done by white employees. This is not to the benefit of minorities and certainly not to the benefit of all Americans.

On a small scale what this does is diminish the overall quality of our establishments. If people are being hired only because they are white and not because they have an outstanding ability to perform there jobs in the presence of non-whites that are able to perform these same jobs exceptionally, we are stunting the growth in quality and efficiency in our own work sectors. As a human being in every sector of employment I would optimally seek the best individuals for a given job regardless of their skin color or country of origin.

Not hiring or promoting minorities who are qualified and who have worked very hard in their career field to achieve high levels experiential and/or academic knowledge discourages these groups of people from pursuing these careers. Regardless of the color of a persons skin, if we as Americans have more people striving for better jobs, higher levels of education it benefits Americans as a whole. I have heard many white people complain about minority groups, stereotyping them as criminals, delinquents, lazy etc. But these same people are the type that will oppress a minority who is the complete opposite of those stereotypes. This does not make since. It is illogical to promote a phenomenon that is undesirable for you. If you do not like minorities to become criminals then it would make…

Range of White-washing Expands to Nubia

Many white people disagree that any white washing has been done to Kemet. When they see the brown skinned paintings, braids, afros on statues, etc, they either cannot see or will not admit a very obvious difference from the white skinned, straight haired artistic re-makes they create to represent Kemet in their own images. These same people claim that Blacks (as well as many whites) who are calling them out on this, are just "making things up", "over reacting", and so on.

In actuality far too many white people have a subconscious aversion to blacks to the extent that if they admire the culture of anything created by African peoples, they cannot credit the creators or admire them in their natural image. Instead they must convert their form into something that is more acceptable or beautiful in their opinions, which is typically a lighter, whiter version of the original. And or terms that historically were use to refer to a prestigious group or individual African/Black person, are then used to refer to much lighter, or white people. This is the phenomenon that many people call 'white-washing' and it can be seen from art, to movies, to music, etc in every aspect of culture. Using the Nubian inspired, white washed art is just one clear cut example of how this works, though, I cannot insure that all the artist were white. It is possible that some of them are black and other ethnicities, but even that would show that there is some subconscious "racial" dissonance between reality and personal mental concept. Luckily most of the images I found in the data collection were fairly accurate in one way or another, no matter who the artists were, but of course this doesn't say much for what has already been done to Kemet, and is being done to Nubia in small doses.

Nubia seems to be the key to unambigiously unlocking and demonstrating most of the untruths that have been taking place with out a doubt. We don't question whether the Nubians were and still are black as apposed to…

All the Blacks in Modern Egypt are Nubians?

Many people arguing for the truthful representation of the Ancient Egyptians have tried providing photos of the modern people in Egypt who are the most direct descendants of Ancient Egypt. These people make up a much larger percentage of the population than the Arab ruling, upper class, but are rarely publicized and are almost always referred to as Nubians by white tourists among others.

If you compare their photos to the paintings of Ancient Egyptians they look strikingly similar in skin tone, and facial features. They are mostly a light brown skinned, type of African Black, with kinky- to loosely curled, to wavy hair. Its hard to say how much variation in the modern population of Ancient Egyptian descendants is due to mixing with the recent Arab populations but there is truly and honestly no doubt about their likeness to their ancestors in Kemet. When you compare these, so called modern Nubians living in Egypt to both Nubians in Modern day Sudan and Ancient Nubia, they don't much match up. Its like playing those kids games where you have the different shapes blocks and they should fit in their appropriate hole; but the way society is mixing and matching things up I wonder if they would be able to play a game so simple.

On the other hand when you look at true modern Nubians, who mostly live in Sudan, modern day Nubia (go figure) they look much like the paintings of ancient Nubians with a darker brown to blackish complexion.

There are a few depictions of very light people in ancient Kemet, like Nefertiti. Her skin tone can most definitely be compared to that of many Arabs but then again if you just base the analysis of Ancient people's physical type on skin color alone you miss things. For example if you take the lighter skin toned blacks and compare them to some of the skin tones in Arabs they will be pretty similar. You would need to look at more characteristics than just skin tone, and take a wide range of samples to distinguish between them. Thankfully we can…

Usain Bolt Should Be More Humble? I DON'T THINK SO

The Olympics isn't exactly a beacon of cultural relativity and understanding, nor are they all that ethical behind the scenes despite what the "we are the world" outward appearance might be. I am married to a Jamaican, who is actually a childhood friend of Usain Bolts, the grew up together in the same little neighborhood in St. Ann. I also had a summer internship with a good number of other Jamaicans and one of the most significant things I can tell you about them as a people is that they are very very proud--And I find it nothing short of inspiring.

When I see them with their flags raised high, I feel proud with them. They have come from great adversity yet still love their home, their identity, culture, etc. Even more so, when you come from adversity and perform the way the Jamaicans did this year at the Olympics you have every reason the be extremely proud and show it! That type of pride and patriotism should be admired, because it can be shared and it harms no one.

I think that the people who complained about Usain's behavior are the ones that are showing character weakness because they have an inability to share in his joy, simply because it was not them winning/or a country they like winning. When I see people win a race like Usain did, no matter where they are from I feel an extreme pride, and joy that transfers over from the winner to me. When Usain continued across the finish line long after he has passed it with his arms raised, when he held up his #1 guesture, when he beat his chest like a champion, when he broke it down with a Jamaican victory dance, I was smiling and laughing ear to ear. Maybe the committee can stop being so up tight and share in that excitement for once.

As far as cultural relativism goes, their complain was culturally insensitive. Being humble, down played and subdued, may be a fine and dandy reaction in your culture, or the culture of the people complaining on the committee but its unJamaican, and frankly its unnatural for anyone to…

An Example of Black Berbers

Greetings great readers,

Today I want to share the Tuareg tribe, or as the call themselves Imazaghan or Imashaghen ("the Free people"); a nomadic North/West African group of Berbers. First off they are a wonderful and beautiful people, with a rich history that gives us lots of information about the social/political climate of North & West Africa in regards to political policy and Arabization. These people remained nomadic during Arabization because they did not like political policies of any of the nearby nations.I also wanted to share the Taureg in hopes of dispelling this

  • "Sub-Suharan Africa= black
  • "and "North Africa = white"
  • and/or the "Berber= white"
  •  thing thats going around.

Berbers are a phenotypically mixed (as in genetically and heterogeneously) ethnic group. I suspect that the lighter Berbers of Africa are of European sources long ago after the first Africans migrated from Africa to Europe, adapted, populated Europe and merged back into Africa at the African/European boarders-Mediterranean region. Berbers seem to have an underlying African culture before Arabization as well, which makes them much more like the rest of brown/black Africa. Many people say there are no or very little brown/black skin Berbers because they haven't seen any. Not sure where they were looking and what criteria they were using to distinguish Berbers from other Africans but the Tuareg are apart of the Berber ethnic group and migrate across the Sahara in North and West Africa.

The Tuareg are also an excellent example of the people called Moors.

Please enjoy the video play list for numerous examples of the Tuareg, Berbers, West and North Africans :-)

Catching Up: Nubia-Kemet

Did you miss me?....If so I apologize I have been working on a number of various projects that kind of preoccupied me. Of course someone who has Anthropology at heart never stops observing or analyzing their surroundings. That being the case I have a lot of things to write up and post here. Please keep checking back to see the latest.

...

Over the past few months I have been refocusing a lot on Sudan, and Ancient Nubia and a lot of humanistic topics surfaced while I was at it. Most of the topics all included grand dealings in hypocrisy fueled by racism. These double standards either go unnoticed, denied or covered up, by the offending groups. One of the non-academic articles that I stumbled upon was about the prospect of Will Smith producing a historically based movie called "The Last Pharaoh" which takes place during the 25th Dynasty of Nubian rule in Egypt and is primarily about the Nubians and Egyptians under Nubian control trying to fight off the Assyrians (Arab invasion). I am not sure how true to history this movie is going to end up, but hollywood has an awful track record so far and this is where the first major hypocrisy reared its racist head. When Trying to find out about the movie there was an abundance of critical articles damning the movie in every thinkable way, strawmen and ad hominums flew left and right. Suddenly it seemed that many white people were concerned about "historical accuracy"  although I didn't see such an uproar when any of the dozens of fictitious and racists Cleopatra - The Mummy to the The Mummy Returns, to what ever else they could think up were released to the public. White people that do not truly care about historical accuracy, but rather, are comfortable with the white Egypt image they grew up with have quietly stood by decade after decade, probably subconsciously pleased with fictitious white-washed images of egypt in movies and even historical documentaries because it re-affirmed something they already wanted so much to…

How to Avoid Culture-Shock (in Japan)

If you haven't taken a look at the About Me page, my minor during Undergrad was Japanese. I have been studying Japanese language and culture since 2001. In 2005 I was able to visit Japan on at leisure for one month staying with five different families of Japanese friends I had made at my University. This essay was written as a result of my experiences and the mistakes that I and my fellow American colleagues would make during our extra-cultural study. The discipline of Anthropology was extremely helpful in lessening and avoiding some of these pit falls, but in retrospect I was able to give experiential advice on actual utilizing these understandings after having gone through a test of these skill on the field.

...

One of the biggest misconceptions of a student studying the Japanese language is that they often overestimate their cultural knowledge based on their language skills. It is clear fact that watching hours upon hours of anime, hanging out with your Japanese teachers assistant after class, and reading samurai books does not prepare you for actually visiting Japan or fully understanding Japanese culture. Of course we do not expect for every Japanese language student to become a Cultural Anthropologist over night, but it is very important for the sake of all Japanese language students who plan to study abroad as well as it is important for the sake of all the Japanese you will encounter during your stay to be aware that as a language student you probably know closer to nothing, than knowing enough about Japanese culture to have a trip that is free of embarrassment and unnecessary instance of culture shock.

An important thing to realize about the Japanese culture or any culture for that matter is that its commoditized, popularized and commercialized image that we see in our own countries is hardly a good representation, and is often a horrid misrepresentation of the culture as it is on its own soil. Image how ridiculous you would thing foreigners were if…

The Home Based Business Trend

I won't lie, like many other Americans who are riding the tails of the information age, I am interested in home based businesses. Although I have yet to find one that I had enough confidence in after my extensive evaluation process in the duration of about 5 years, I still keep my eyes peeled for something I can give my personal green light to. The most recent prospect that I stumbled upon was something called cash gifting and programs like they Overnight Cash System.

As I began to piece together a direct and to the point understanding of what this new home based trend was, I started to wonder about the bigger picture, and I will take you there as I explain what cash gifting is.

Essentially I believe that there were a number of people, similar to myself, who saw through the too good to be true "products", the membership requirements that made it necessary for you the supposed business owner have to buy a monthly quota of your own company's products, and the fact that when the trend died down, the only people that actually got rich were those at the top.

Cash gifting has solved some of those issues, since there is no product, and no monthly fees. Basically new comers have to give a large amount of money, anywhere from $100 to the seeming default amount of $3,500 as a no strings attached gift to a mentor. This mentor supposedly did the same thing for their mentor when they entered. New members continue to be recruited, yes recruited despite what some cash gifters claim you do actually have to recruit new members for it to be successful. The new members and the gifts that they contribute are distributed in ways not unlike any of the thousands of MLM businesses we've already seen.

I do see some major problems with Cash gifting. The most obvious one I hope would be the fact that there is hardly a way to ensure that the mentor you signed up under actually did any gifting him or herself. After all the only thing you need the mentor for is so that they can teach you how…

Social Blue Prints: An end to pollution for modern lifestyles

As I thought about the garbage heap we are making of our planet, and the fact that my country of residence is leading the way I began to brainstorm about solutions to the problem that would drastically create a non-polluting yet still modern lifestyle for industrialize modern nations.

grocerystoreImage a world in which in a trip to the grocery store you would not see elise with boxes upon boxes, cans, plastic bags of products like this.

<---But instead you bring to the store your household's collection of bulk containers in varying sizes, all of which have easy dispensers at the bottom for convenient at home use. Home designers and Refrigerator companies will be apart of the effort in collaborating shelves that accommodate your household's containers. In the store are a series of elise like you are used to but they have huge containers of your favorite products. Produce and meat (as in deli) sections might be pretty much the same but instead of those little plastic bags you would pick your produce and put it in your container. Meat at the deli would be fresh cut and put in its proper compartment of a meat container. The store would be ready with staff on hand to assist you with refilling your containers with your desired amounts of your favorite beverages in your beverage containers, cereal and oats in another container, fresh vegetables and fruit in your vegi/fruit container, snacks, meat, eggs and so on. When you get home you need only put your containers back into the shelves of your pantry and refrigerator that are made to fit. No more boxes, cans, plastic wrap, and no more plastic bags to but all those boxes cans and plastic bagged foods in. This method would also reduce the amount of contamination risks between getting the food from the store and home.

Until people collaborate on a full effort move to care for our planet here are some simple things you can do in your town to reduce the waste:

* Bring a reusable grocery bag or bags, depending on how much shopping you do…

Commercial Companies Going $Green$

The fact that commercial companies who traditionally sell us poison are jumping on the 'green', organic, health conscious, environmental bandwagon was too predictable to register on our B.S. meters. I mean every time there is a pop-culture trend we see a burst of new products from old companies that are supposed to cater to the new demand. This is not new, remember the whole Atkin's Diet thing?. The point of this article is that I am hoping people are smart enough not to fall for gimmicks, these companies are throwing our way.

imageEverywhere you look you see natural, this and green that. 7-up (and many other soft-drink companies) are in their second round of gimmick hopping, at least to my knowledge. First they were jumping on general health awareness by adding "vitamins" to their drinks. I just want to ask, why would you drink poison with vitamins in it? Doesn't that just ring with purpose defeating? Most of the truly health aware people said no thanks to carbonated vitamins, and continued to evolve into the green, organic, vegan, etc population we are seeing today. Now we have 'natural' 7-up, and 'The Natural' from Pizza Hut (grossly over priced by the way). The company that tops them all, in my opinion, is Clorox with their new 'GreenWorks' line of products.

Perhaps all these supposedly 'green' changes aren't a bad thing, afterall green is green no matter what *$$$* the motivation, right. I am just worried that the lack of integrity of most of these companies is going to take away from people & businesses that have been 'green' from the start. Those are the companies that were built from the ground up for the purpose of providing safe, natural, and environmentally light footed products just because that is the right and healthy thing to do, not because their market research suggested that it would be a profitable move to jump on. My concern flows deeper in the fact that I am very well aware that these big companies often use the natural thing on their label in…

Do YOU Think Racism No longer Exist?

If you think racism is dead, diminished, not really that widespread, has gotten much much better, or any other ways that you could be ill-informed about the reality of racism, I invite you to a wake up call. Jack Dovido, a  psychology professor at Yale conducted a video recored experiment about people's response to an act of group vandalism depending on the race of the vandals. The experiment takes a serious turn for the worst when an unexpected piece of data was presented by a person who ignored the white vandals, but called the police on two black males taking a nap in their cars.

So for those of you who wonder why black people think too much about racism, won't just get over it, or any other insensitive things that can be said. My answer is in the data.

To read the full article and watch the television airing of the report "Confronted with Teen 'Vandals'" please click here

Some people argue that they should have done the same experiment in a "black neighborhood" to see if the reactions would have been reciprocated in verse. They should do the same experiment in different demographics, but people should not apply this argument as if you are going to definitely see the same level of discrimination. Black people, typically would not call the police on white people napping in their car, no matter what area it was. Also black people that do discriminate against white people do it in different ways. Black people assume an entirely different set of things about white people, so the racist stereotypes applied by white people onto black people will likely not reflect the same way if done even perfectly in reverse.  I would like to point out, too, that the neighborhood did seem a bit "mixed", rather than "white". One major fault that I do have with the experiment, other than the fact that the didn't test the same scenario in different demographics, is that there is no control. We do not get to see if the people who called the police on the black kids would have also…

"I'm All For Legal Immigration"--What Does That Really Mean?

Whenever I see discussions or pages that talk about illegal immigration I often see the accompanying phrase, "I'm all for legal immigration, but totally against illegals" or something to that effect. Having a perspective from both sides of the spectrum I urge people to actually find out what legal immigration actually takes. I can almost guarantee that the people who fling this phase about, although possibly well meaning, don't actually know what legal immigration is. Don't worry though, in this page I am going to share that information with you.

Legal immigration is a term used for a process that is, in theory, supposed to allow eligible people to immigrate to the United States, in a socially safe, documented, orderly fashion. It is also supposed to protect the American citizen from the, supposed, freeloader on the tax dollar, and ensure that criminals who aren't here legally, do not end up filling our jails. In actuality, legal immigration is such a long, complicated, haphazard, and costly process that it is not feasible for most people who actually are entitled, for one reason or another, to legally immigrate.

Lets postulate for a moment, some of the things we hope a legal immigrant represents and then lets match that up with the legal immigration process. We hope that a legal immigrant speaks fluent english. This, in my opinion isn't too much to expect. I don't think we should necessarily require it in all cases, but as a norm it can validly be an expectation. The immigration process and the documents required are most often only in english. But is that really enough?

There are several basic conditions under which a person can legally immigrate to the United States. The major ones are employment sponsor, immediate relatives or family preference, marriage, investment, and lottery. Investment means that the person is filthy rich, donating or building a company in value between 500,000 and a million dollars with at least 10 employees, so we aren't even going to…

Small vs Large Network Theory

For the past week, pondering ideas pertaining to my response to Alibi article, along with other cultural research about various groups of African and African descendant people I developed a hypothesis dealing with these people's tendency to prefer small social networks rather than large government organized societies. Many people who are racists, weather they consider themselves to be or not usually amount small political or social groups of Black people to be a failure to unify, a failure to civilize, a tendency toward violence and a number of other assumptions about these people.

One of the groups of black people that I was focusing on this week other than various tribal Africans was diasporic black gangs, like the bloods and crips, but more focused on the gangs of Kingston Jamaica. My husband and I watched about and hour long documentary of a man named Kemp Ross doing some clearly anthropological work, although I'm pretty sure he was somehow related to the UK police force. What this very astute, corageous, and very open minded, empathetic, white man did was go into the roughest and toughest parts of Kingston despite the very real risk that he could be shot. At one point he even attempted to stay with the gang bangers he'd befriended, over night. It was only by their own recommendation that he leave for his own safety that he was escorted out. I do recommend that everyone reading this article watch the documentary as well, so I have embedded the video here as well.

One of the notable things that I noticed while he interviewed some of the gang members was that they were very logical, eloquent and intelligent amidst the chaos. It makes anyone who notices these quality character traits ponder the social complexity that creates such a chaotic atmosphere. I do recall a forum poster who gave a synopsis for these types of circumstances, it was something to the effect of, people who had fairly sound independent social networks are now thrown into a spiral of conflict…

The Ever Mutable Definition of "Negroid"

Over the many years I've spent studying and reading about peoples around the world and those in my own locale, I've come across a common phenomenon time and time again. That is the idea that some "people of science" or "scientific authorities" define race as something biologically static as they have classed off the human species into several different types. The problem is that these types are neither consistantly demonstrated in actual human populations nor are they used in a standard fashion. Instead what I have observed is that the terms especially the Caucasoid and Negroid designation are extremely mutable. They appear to change whenever some racial, nationalist, or bigotist purpose needs to be served.

I share this observation because I feel that it is an obvious fallacy when some actual thought is given, but people in general contribute to the "validation" of these pseudo sciences by giving authority with out the supporting data that should go along with it. Below I have provided as many of the instances of race categorization mutability below to demonstrate that the traditional scientific  uses of racial grouping is truly not scientific, but as opinionated and subjective as being accepted into a country club/fraternity or another or being rejected all together.

As a student of Anthropology I do note the practical usefulness of being able to determine a person's possible physical appearance from their skeletal remains alone. But as noted by professionals in the field there is a large margin of error simply because there are a gradient of features attributed to people of all geographic regions. People do not fit cleanly into these racial groups that people have constructed. Further people may not have identified with the particular racial group that their remains would suggest. For example we can take another look at the one-drop method of racially categorizing people as "black" in the United States. Anyone with any degree of visible African characteristics…

East African Diversity

In many entries I make mention of how diverse Africa is. Most people, of the Westernized world at least, have this singular stereotyped image of what an African is. Most times its not positive, pretty, or accurate for that matter. One of the major problems is the role that the media and our sorry excuses for education systems play in promoting distorted, racist, lop-sided images of African people. Often times the only images of African people that Americans see are those that fit stereotyped images of the primitive, naked tribes man. The images show no depth, when there is an abundance of things to be admired about the culture, rather images are more focused on nudity of cultural practices that might seem odd by American standards. The images highlight difference without promoting the realization of similarities and the appreciation of those differences. They are likely to focus on extreme poverty or violence, which are serious problems that should be publicized, just not without the alternative images to equalize perception and give a more well rounded, truthful view.

Because I, nor most of the rest of us can find the time and finances to travel the world I truly value photographs of people from all over. Thanks to the internet and public interest you can find hundreds of people who put together video slide shows of cultural images with one theme or another. Many of them are a good way for people to get a more truthful visual perspective that isn't provided in our propaganized media. Here is one of my favorites dedicated to the people of Eastern and South Eastern countries in Africa.

Sexual Tourism A Source of HIV in Africa?

There have been quite a few articles added here lately about cases of sexual tourism in different parts of the world. No matter who it involves we can see there are negative outcomes for this type of abuse, exploitation, "taking advantage of the atmosphere" or whatever you'd like to call it. It seems that the Western and European world is creating a sexual play ground, with a variety of different exploits, around the world. You have black men at the disposal of white women in the Caribbean and in many African countries, you have black/hispanic women at the disposal of white men in places like Brazil, you have underaged black boys at the disposal of white homosexual pedophiles and you have underaged asian girls at the disposal of white heterosexual pedophiles in South East Asian countries like Cambodia. But there is another serious side to the sexual tourist story and that is the possible spread of HIV.

Africa and other 3rd world countries being ravaged by the AIDS virus, are often condemned as being filthy, tainted, or doomed because of the continent's high rate of AIDs suffers. Although I have reservations as to whether I believe that HIV is the cause of AIDS its significant to note certain trends that rely on that assumption or understanding. Twenty or so years ago AIDS was virtually unknown in Africa. Its interested that sometime around the 1970s was when the sexual exploitation of children by European tourist gained popularity, at least among those immoral enough to do such a thing. A larger percentage of the pedophilia taking place on the African continent between foreign tourists and African children was homosexual pedophillia.

We all should know by now that, although HIV/AIDS is not a "gay" disease, it is more easily spread via anal intercourse.  This is because of the amount of blood vessels in the area and the tendency for anal lacerations however small, that make the transmission of the virus occur at higher rates than "traditional" intercourse.

I'll…

Sexual Tourism: World Wide Cases

The sexual tourism thing is so big and is taking place in so many different parts of the world I wanted to compile a collection of videos on the different cases. I can't get them all but I hope to show you all how much of an epidemic it is. So while you turn on your tv and watch pointless things like Brittney take the later part of her extremely privileged life for granted you will know in your mind that bigger things are going on and hopefully keep your focus on things that matter.

NOTE: I have noticed a trend in opinions or reactions from on lookers or observers of sexual tourism when it involves adult black males and white women as the tourist. Many people take these cases lightly saying things like "well you know those guys enjoy it", as if sexual tourism in this form is some type of blessing for these men. ITS NOT. The underlying causes that create an economic climate conducive to sexual tourism is poverty. These countries exist under circumstances that make it slim to impossible for them to flourish based on agriculture, manufacture or import and export, etc like most 1st world countries. When all they have left is tourism they are circumstantially forced to make the best of it and supplying the demand of sex tourists is one of the ways they can make a decent living. Plus I take it that the people in question are imagining drop dead gorgeous white American and European goddesses, wrong again. They are typically overweight or old, even married at times. It has also come to my attention that black women who fit into the same descriptive categories behave similarly to white women while on "sexual tours" in the caribbean. Just understand that its not any kind of paradise job.

Sexual Tourism in The Caribbean

If you are not familiar with sexual tourism in the Caribbean please watch the video before reading this entry.

The video truly sheds light on the topic but I feel that there was some manipulation of actuality on the part of the tourist in the film who painted the picture of "the innocent white victim who was seduced and used by the terrible Caribbean men". This may very well be the case for some women and partially true for others but essentially these women are going there to have fun and let loose while they are on vacation. They are also there to explore cultural fantasies that aren't possible where they are from.

Sexual Tourism to the Caribbean and both Central and South American is not new. Men were doing it years before females like those in this film caught on to the trend. White men have actually been sexual tourist perhaps for centuries in different forms. But the basic reasons for both females and males becoming sexual tourists is pretty much the same throughout the ages, with only a few minor tweaks here and there. In the last two decades or so, there has been an increase in black on black sexual tourism from Westernized Blacks to the Caribbean as well, but the nature of these interactions varies slightly. Unattractive black women typically behave in the same manner as white sexual tourist, meaning they aren't going there to find "love" but just to let loose and have a good time. On the other hand young attractive black women who travel to the Caribbean were reported to seek more serious interactions which lead to long term relationships or terminate when nothing stable can be established. The behavior of the Jamaica women as reported in the film, and that of black tourist reported during interview with Jamaican men contradicts traditional stereotypes of black women that suggest they are hyper-sexual and promiscuous.

Most sexual tourists are white, from the United States or Europe. They go to third world countries and have romantic and sexual…

Blacks & Whites Same Racial Crime

Many white people have historically been guilty of denying, hiding or not acknowledging having any black heritage when do and know it. This would have to have been for the one-drop rule to work. Its is also what lead to the "passing" for white phenomenon by people who might otherwise be hushed into the black pile based on the one-drop rule. The focus and blame has most often been on white people but I want to point out that black people are just as guilty if not more for buying into the one-drop rule by helping to enforce it as a reality. And also for socially exiling anyone who is considered "black" but acknowledges having a mixed heritage.

Blacks strongly discourage people who seem proud of all of their heritage. It is only acceptable to be "black". Only people with parents considered to be of two distinctly different groups are allowed to be called mixed or safely acknowledge other part of their heritage within American Black culture. People who have an obvious mixed appearance but are both considered black according to the one-drop rule and have equally "mixed looking" parents who were also acknowledged as just being black under the one-drop rule are most often effected by this phenomenon.

I witnessed this first hand in one African American Studies course I signed up for and quickly dropped. One student who identifies as being black but also acknowledges his other back ground asked a question about racial identity for people who have mixed histories. The black professor seemed very uncomfortable with his question and began an attack on the student suggesting that something was wrong for him for not "knowing" who he is. She ended by saying "I know who I am". I tried to defend him which was common since this was not the only occasion upon which this professor had convoluted perceptions of points students were making in her class. My efforts were in vein, to say the least, but the point is that this type of hostility among blacks when someone in the community…

Blacks Promoting Self Degradation

pastedgraphic_textmediumI was browsing around as usual when I came upon this on a few "friends" pages. I have to say that I am both ashamed and disappointed by this. I don't see anything funny about it.

Moreover, the people making these comments and those responsible for posting the photo consider themselves devout Christians. I wonder why they think this type of thing is acceptable, according to secular morals or their own Biblical set.

Check me if you think I'm over reacting. But I honestly feel for all the people from African countries who might see this. This would be viewed as a racial insult if it were on a white person's page, but somehow these people find it acceptable because they themselves are black. To me this is not the same thing as making fun of one's self. This is similar to the nationalism between the people of many asian countries. It also demonstrates the role that blacks in the United States are playing in global stereotyping of African descendant peoples.

It is one thing for Black people to complain about the negative images that other groups are perpetuating about African/Black peoples in the media on a global level. Its another to complain yet participate in the degradation of one's own cultural image.

Blacks are black no matter where in diaspora they are, and they should act accordingly. The names and photos of the posters responsible have been blurred to protect anonymity.

Racial Debate Concerning Jena 6

The most recent conversation/debate that I had with anyone over racial issues was with a fellow youtuber I met with in the comments section of a video on the Jena 6. I have included a pretty inclusive video that explains both sides of what happened and how people are reacting to it, if you aren't aware of it or don't have all the facts. Then I have copied and pasted the conversations I had below. The first set of dialogues took place on the actual video comments and include a good bit of data on the racial climate of these types of forums. Some things to note about this case are the ways in which these people interact with one another specifically the difference in how STUMPgrinder57 conducts himself in the forum and then how the way he conducts himself changes when we have the one on one dialogue through personal messaging. This is significant because it demonstrates one of the fallacious characteristics that many racists whites demonstrate, in which they passionately deny that they are racists but there are times when they are and have been blatantly just that. It is significant also because it shows a possible connection between how people change according to their environment (i.e. a person is more likely to exhibit racist behavior when the actions are more easily justifiable, (interaction with someone who fits into a negative stereotype you have about another group) I will point out some of this in the actual dialogue as notes with this color text. Anything that I have said in the dialogue itself is highlighted by pink textSTUMPgrinder57's real name and demographic information was changed or omitted to protect his annonymity. Due to the nature of these dialogs there is an excessive amount of questionable language, therefore use your discression when viewing.

Whose Fault is it Anyway? (All About Racism)

I spend a lot of time on website forums trying to mediate between people of different groups and providing rational perspective from both sides of the conflict, so that those groups can dismiss their unnecessary anger and focus on the issues. Part of this is getting both sides to admit their own (or group's) faults and contributions to the problem. The context is most often race relationship between black and white Americans, although racism can and does take place between almost every group of people to varying degrees.

Essentially whites do more, directly or indirectly by virtue of white privilege, to create problems or difficulties for blacks, forming a climate that is uncondusive to their success. Blacks on the other had are often guilty of doing things to maintain this negative social environment rather than working to counter the effects of all types of racism. I'd like to address some of the details that exist on both sides before I start to share any of the actual dialogues I have had with people in these forums. The following are generalization that do not apply to every individual within these groups but are perceived by people in either group to be overwhelmingly common and thus are at the core of racial conflicts and race related issues. Keep in mind that neither of these lists are to be considered complete, they are just my personal domain list of american racial issues. Links to various examples of these racial atrocities will be provided throughout the article for your reference.

Whites:

Issues with Blame, Guilt, Apologies & Denial

  • Blame slavery on blacks because it was other Africans who sold them into slavery. Also fail to look at the term slavery with cultural relativism which would reveal the fact that slavery in African cultures was totally different from what slavery was like in the Americas. African types of slavery were more like indentured servitude in which the defeated and captured in battle would be a slave to the victors for a set number…

Institutional Racism in the Workplace Revisited

I wrote an article earlier today about institutional racism at a hotel in South Park, Charlotte. Hoping to be somewhat relieved by having gotten the injustices out in writing I realized that only justice for my people would suffice.

I looked into finding out what evidence would be needed for the people in the article to build a legal case against the employer. I began to look into where and to whom these types of violations could reported to and actually have them pursue the cases. I say actually pursue because I filed an unrelated claim with the North Carolina Attorney General's  office in Charlotte and had the whole thing brushed off when there was no response from the offending party. Which reminds me that I need to call them back on that... Anyway something that really upsets me is recalling how many white people I've heard saying things like "why don't they just get jobs", "if they just try hard and get educations they can be just as successful", "racism is pretty much gone, and they need to just let slavery go" so on and so forth, the examples could wrap the earth multiple times in 10 px font.

I don't know which bothers me more, the fact that many white people believe that those things are true, that we black people just don't try, we create our own problems that they have no hand in OR that many other white people just don't care, or actually are quite comfortable with these issues. It gets harder and harder for me to remain logical with things like this so heavily effecting my life and the lives of my people. It gets harder every day not to hate back. But what good would it do to be like them? None.

But do take this message away if you are white and you stumble across these words. There are thousands of educated, strong black people who DESERVE good jobs, promotions raises and are being prevented from moving up in life, still based only on skin color. Its a reality. If you are one of those good white people, who don't stand for that type of behavior, then…

Racial Discrimination at Residence Inn Marriott in South Park

This is an account of blatant racial discrimination transpiring in the Residence Inn Marriott in South Park, Charlotte. These cases involve the discrimination of highly qualified applicants and current employees on the basis of race. Strong correlations can be seen between the hiring practices of the company, methods and amounts of payment by the company and the race of applicants and employees. The details of each situation are as follows.

Three highly qualified black males applied for supervisor/managerial positions at the South Park location. One of the applicants was a transfer to Charlotte from another Marriott Hotel where he also held a managerial position. This applicant would be fully qualified and familiar with the inner workings of Marriott Hotels. Another applicant has been working with the company for over a year in a position for which he is over qualified for on the basis of having years of experience in the hospitality field as well as several certifications in front desk management. Despite the low rank of this employee he is often called upon to train and direct employees who have been with the company much longer. Little is known about the third African American who applied for the position.

All of those highly qualified applicants were turned down for the job and an less qualified white male was hired for the position. This applicant had no prior experience with Marriott Hotels while two of the other applicants did. The most astonishing factor in the case is that the black applicant who currently works for Marriott at this location who was turned down for the position was then asked to train the newly hired white applicant.

The hotel front desk is now completely managed by white individuals. Further there is a differential between the way most minority managers are paid and the way white managers are paid. In the past the position of Engineering Manager was held by a white male. Currently a black male holds that position and he is the only…

Ebay Powersellers

I just want to share a bit of experiential advice for people who use or are planning to use ebay. Try to buy from the "little person" not the "big business" sellers of ebay. They have similar disfunctions as big corporations in the tangible world, suffer from. They often have terrible customer service with only automated responses. Unlike the smaller business owner that usually cares about their customers, big time sellers take their customers for granted because of the shear volume, and perhaps the number of people there are keeping the gears turning. They also lack the time to give each customer one on one attention if something goes awry.

This difference between an interaction between a big business in the real world and one on ebay is the feedback system. In the real world when you are mistreated by a big corporation you can just choose not to deal with them any more and warn others of your experience. They aren't going to leave you bad feedback in retaliation so that your relationship with other retailers are effected. Thats exactly the case on ebay (UPDATE: ebay has recently chosen to change the feedback system so that sellers can not leave negative feedback for customers while they have balanced this by cracking down on non-baying bidders, much of this article is still relevant). Here are a few examples that I came across personally in the last few weeks. I was buying a lot of things from different sellers over the holiday and thus I was exposed to more risk than usual.

Foxy Facets: I bought one item from them, and at check out they had automatically added optional insurance. I did not see the option to remove this and thus paid it without noticing that it was added. When I clicked the pay button I noticed the high total, but it was already too late. So I sent a message asking for them to remove the insurance and refund the difference. Of course they give some reason as to why they couldn't do this. They end up giving me a store credit code for the amount,…

Are Scammers Bad?

I have mixed feelings about scams when it comes to people from 3rd world countries or disadvantaged histories in which those socioeconomic states are the result of being manipulated, stolen from, taken advantage of by another group of people, historically and contemporarily. They say two wrongs don't make a right, but at times, that saying seems just another justification of a wrong doing gone unchecked. People, especially white people with imperialistic and colonial histories, agree that slavery and the like, were wrong but they rarely like to address and admit the fact that continuing to unfairly benefit from slavery and oppression is also wrong. Therefore saying "two wrongs don't make a right" as if the speaker is free of wrong because some arbitrary increment of time has gone by and because the wealth was inherited and not directly generated by said individual, is a boat that doesn't float for me. If you can inherit the financial wealth of slavery, shouldn't you inherit the guilt if you knowingly accept it with no intention of returning it to the descendants of those who labor, land or resources generated it?

Quick side note, its not fair that most of non-black, that have been done wrong in American history have been reparated to some degree. However insufficient any of these cases may have been at least the United States government acknowledged and attempted to correct their mass wrong doings. Yet, black Americans who are descendants of slaves were never given any type of formal apology or atonement for one of the deepest scars in American history. Then we have widely circulating stereotypes, even if based in truth about these minority groups (i.e. they are criminals, thieves, ghetto, loud, etc) without any regard to the conditions that created these manifestations. Who are these white people to call the minorities groups, thieves and criminals when this land was stolen! When the labor that built America was stolen! When the resources that decorate the…

White People & Dreadlocks: A Problematic Union                        by a blogger named Scott

My Take:

I came across this entry in someone's blog when I was looking for information on locked hair. The original can be found here. I have heard this argument about white people and locked hair from many different sources, mostly black people, but I have differing views on the topic.

I do agree that white people locking their hair is similar to black people straightening theirs. Its unnatural, high maintenance and frankly, a little (or a lot) odd, depending on who you ask.

White people often do this to rebel or to create an image that they feel represents freedom, anarchy, or anti-establishmentalism. Some of those things are nice ideas, but for them to take something that is an ethnic hair style for blacks and use it for their own ends is bothersome, to say the least. Many establishments that have policies and guidelines against "dreadlocks" have created this policy partly because of the perceived  image perpetuated by some lock wearers. White people who parade around with locks acting like hippies create yet another negative stigma that people can apply to a hair style that is just a normal way to wear the hair, for blacks.

I have several white friends who have or had dreadlocks and we've gotten in many arguments about their hair.  I tell them I don't think white people should have dreads and that it's cultural appropriation.  They say they respect and embrace the cultural roots of dreadlocks; that it's appreciation, not appropriation.  As much as I like my friends, they're wrong.

The only white people who should even in the least be permitted to sport locks are white Rastafarians.  To me, that seems to be a contradiction in terms anyway which I'm not going to deal with here, but since I'm guessing 98% of white people with dreads don't identify as Rastafarian, then it's safe to say that in general white people shouldn't have dreads.  I don't care about your reasons behind it - get some scissors and cut 'em off.  Please.

Several years ago when I was even more naive than I am now, I seriously considered getting dreadlocks.  I thought it was cool and counterculture-ish (yes, I was trying to assimilate into that counterculture uniform).  I didn't have a full grasp on the significance of dreadlocks, but I figured since I meant well then it was ok.  Luckily, someone wiser than I pulled me aside and informed me that it was a bad idea.  As a result, I still got a curly, poofy mop that at least pisses off no one else but me.

Though it should seem clear enough that white people + dreadlocks = cultural appropriation, a lot of white people don't get it.  (Surprise, surprise!)  The best way I've found to explain it to them is to remind them that they're white.  Dreadlocks are not devoid of meaning.  By a white person wearing them they are taking on or displaying a symbol that is expressive of a racial pride or a stand against oppression or other meaning that does not pertain to white people.  It doesn't matter what meaning a white person gives their own dreadlocks, dreadlocks already come with meanings that do not pertain to, nor belong on, a white person's head.

The bottom line is that…

Stealing All Our Good Men & Women?

This phrase or similar, usually comes in the context of a angry person who is blaming their lack of success in romance on interracial dating. Proponents from both sides give the argument that "we" (the members of said group, usually blacks or whites) "need to put this (interracial dating) to a stop because they (the other group) is stealing all our good men or women" (none of which they are able to date anyway).

I always find this some what comical, because people are going to fall in love with who ever they fall for regardless of their skin color. Even racist people can fall in love with a person of a different group if they get the chance to know that person well enough and find they mesh well. The whole race thing will suddenly just fly out of the door. But really the issue is that a black person dating a white person, or vise versa, doesn't take away any more possible love interests from anyone. That argument has the same logic as saying "We need to stop all people from dating each other cause they are taking away all the good women for me to date"

* You don't need every woman or man to be single in order to have people to date. Its not feasible and its not realistic.

* That said having every man or woman from one group only date people in her same group is not going to give you more of a chance at dating than you have now.

* If you are having a hard time finding someone in your own group (or any for that matter) to date its not interracial dating's fault its probably your fault!

When anyone of any color is in a committed relationship with another person of any color that usually makes that person off limits for dating. Color aside. So what is the big deal if its a white or black person? You don't have a chance with them regardless of their mate's skin color.

Here is the YouTube video that inspired this article:

This guy is a little on the pathetic side, if I am allowed to say so. He expresses that he can't find any good black women to date (or no good…

Virtual Worlds, Replacing Reality

Ok, so I was watching Dr. Phil and I saw this show about a girl who is like 11 years old or something and totally completely addicted to Second Life. I have my second life name and I have the app downloaded but have yet to get it going, too many other things in my First Life going on.

But anyway this girl is on there almost 24-7. She has a huge house, fancy car, nice money making set up, a boyfriend, every thing she doesnt have in her real life. Addiction is a problem right, but I have read a few articles on Second Life and how people are becoming millionaires from the whole thing, by the creation of virtual businesses.

My thing is that I bet you, if the girl was making millions her mom would have never called Dr. Phil, and even if she did I doubt that he would have invited her on the show. Money changes things, and if she is making money people no longer see it as an addiction. Being a work-a-holic is not a crime in this country, and enjoying your job is something highly sought after.

The other issue about this situation that I wanted to comment on was how freaked out her mom was when she came in to her room and caught her avatar making out with her virtual boy friend on her virtual bed in her virtual mansion. I wanted to figure out why her mom freaked out (not that she shouldn't have) but the situation entails a lot of different issues than the kissing the real boy on your real bed would. We allow our children to play games in which they, act out with virtual characters, things that aren't appropriate, safe, or feasible in the real world, and its ok. For example, high speed reckless driving which could endanger and often injures virtual pedestrians; the use of virtual firearms and other weapons to commit virtual murder; The selling of virtual drugs; the list goes on. I know that some of these examples only occur in T to M rated games but some of the less culturally offensive ones are common place in children's games. We commonly don't get all bent out of shape…

Abuse of Our Soldiers by the US Government

I was having a conversation with a friend with extensive military background in her family. The topic was about the 911 conspiracy and how the attacks were proven staged inside jobs, falsified by the government to give the American people motivation to initiate the War in Iraq. Like many I have spoken to they are lead by some type of strange blind faith, that the government is some type of loving entity that maintains integrity and would never ever do such things let along get away with it. Its strange because we need only open a history book to see that our government has been doing this to us for years. Governments have been doing this for centuries.

To me soldiers are the ones who get screwed by the government most often and most severely that any civilian typically is. This is sad because these same soldiers go into the military loyal to an image and promises that do not exist that will soon be broken. I have had plenty of uneasy conversations with members of military families about certain government conspiracies. These people defend the Government's non existent integrity like very young children defend the existence of Santa Clause.

20/20 did an expose that brought me to tears. Basically soldiers in Iraq had become so mentally and physically damaged by what they saw and experienced during the war many of them turned to drug abuse. Military psychologists and those that run the drug abuse help programs for the military out right denied that their was any problem with drug abuse, or mental illness among soldiers. When the soldiers were interviewed, and quite and number of them were, the truth was a totally different story. What makes it worse is that they aren't getting the help that they need and are being punished like common criminals for the use of illegal drugs. Some, even those who have not abused drugs have been discharged and robbed of their retirement benefits for failing to "cope" with the way the military handles the emotional well being of soldiers.…

E-Book Scams

Just thought I'd put a small but significant warning out there about those small websites constructed just for the purpose of pushing some over priced e-book. I have come across a few e-books that have had good information in them. The problem was that it wasn't enough information for the price and that it repeats a lot of information that you can find doing internet research on your own. If you are going to spend money on literature of any kind it should probably be a REAL BOOK not an ebook. If you shop around you can find real books written on the topic you are interested on Amazon.com for a fraction of their retail prices. Snatch up some of those, you will be much happier than you would be if you spend 29.99 on a 15 page pdf file. And if those long, long, long pages of persuasive sales pitch just have your finger aching to click the "buy now" button here are a few clues to help you assess the probability of you regretting it once you've read it.

1. The page consists of a good amount of text on how terrible the seller's life used to be (before he/she figured out the "secret(s)" he/she is going to share with you in the pdf. Or better yet it talks about how terrible your life must be and lists a bunch of stuff that you'd probably enjoy, like more money, time with your family, etc.

2. There are graphics on the page of things like vacation shots, people who look like a family spending time together, fancy cars, mansions, yachts, and the kicker...rolls or stacks of money.  Real books that have real information to use these tactics to sell information, you can go to a library and check them out before you buy or read summaries and reviews of the book to determine if the CONTENT is what you are after. Don't by an image by real information. You might also see graphics of software boxes, books, and even CD-Roms that are supposed to give a graphical representation of the item. I have studied the sales tactics of these types of pages and these types of graphics are supposed…

Skype Rip Off

imageSince I have been talking about the "getting screwed" plague thats going around I'd like to call to your attention how Skype is a rip off if you are using it in any other way then connecting directly to others using the Skype program which is free. This is how they get over on people well at least the two I have heard of:

image

Misleading ads:

Skype Pro: "Pay nothing per minute to national landlines"

BUT: They charge you a "connection" fee & also charge you the same rate to make calls within your own country. The only thing pro about Skype Pro is that they are pro-fessionals at parting you from your cash!

Misleading rates:
Ok everyone knows how to write currency right? You put the dollars to the right of the little dot thingy and the cents to the left! Well looky here how Skype writes out their rates just to trick people who don't double check before clicking send.

To call Jamaican Mobile Phones it cost: $ 0.224/minute
Thats not parts of cents as you might think at first glance its actually $2.24 per minute

Why don't they just write it out the correct way? CAUSE THEY ARE HOPING YOU GET CONFUSED AND BUY SKYPE THINKING ITS A GOOD DEAL

____________BOTTOM LINE ITS NOT...STAY AWAY FROM SKYPE

Rental Nightmare: The trials...

After a very crappy year renting I am fed up enough to be motivated to go after my own. A lot of people fear home buying, for reasons I really don't understand. Maybe I will get it later. I am not saying that the process is easy---ITS STRESSFUL AS HELL---but I know that end the end it will be well worth it.

Just the thought of not throwing hundreds of dollars in to a bottomless pit each month makes it all the more appealing. And I will be happy not to have to beg and pledge, even chase down managers in the rent office just to keep the place hospitable. Tired of other stupid renter who don't give a crap about the property because they don't own it, and therefore feel free to do idiotic and careless things like flood their upper floor apartment. WHICH MEANS MY LOWER FLOOR APT WAS FLOODED TOO. Did they do anything about it, not really, the stopped the leak and that was that. Hughon and I were still up at 3am soaking up the flood with our good bath towels and moving all of our toiletries out of the bathroom from AQUA HELL.

Woodfield Gardens - flooding damage 05

Woodfield Gardens - flooding damage 02

Now there is mold in there and stains from water damage in multiple locations surrounding the bath room. Think I am exaggerating?

Here are some pics. Here is a little description of that you are looking at. The bathroom in the corners of the shower where the tiles meat the tub. The caulking in the entire bathroom is pretty much useless and disgusting looking too. The flooding was probably more extensive than we could have seen at external glance because the flooding spanned multiple areas of my apt and also when we opened the bathroom mirror cabinet to get our belongings out water was flooding in it from with in the wall! Well moister on anything made of wood or plaster, etc will cause it to warp. The walls have warped pulling all of the caulk loose. The problem here now is that moister can get all in between and trapped in the tiles causing the gross display of mold before you. We've sprayed it with bleach/pinesol/oxy-clean etc to no avail. I…
